At the pier in Flåm

The water is flattest in the first hours after the village wakes up, which is the difference between a comfortable two hours in an open boat and a bouncy one, and the coach parties from Bergen have yet to reach the quay. Later the sun drops behind the mountain walls and the fjord goes into shade — the light people photograph, and the reason the last cruises fill up. Between May and September there is daylight for both; from November to March the middle of the day is the whole timetable.

What it's like
One fjord, three quite different days on it
Almost everyone arrives in Flåm with the same picture in their head: a narrow arm of water with mountain walls on both sides, waterfalls coming down them, and a boat somewhere in the middle of it. What nobody tells you before you book is that there are three quite different days sold under the same heading, they cost very different amounts, and they are not interchangeable.
The first is the RIB safari. Two hours, open to the air, out of Flåm and into the Aurlandsfjord and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, past small fjord farms and waterfalls, with a local guide telling you whose farm that is and why anybody ever built it there. It is the fastest way into the narrow part of the fjord.
The second is the fjord cruise. The same water at a quarter of the speed, on an electric boat with a deck to stand on and a salon to sit in, usually between Flåm and Gudvangen. On most of the listings here that cruise is one leg of a longer guided day that also takes in the Flåm Railway and a coach over the mountains.
The third is the view from above. The Stegastein platform stands 650 metres over the Aurlandsfjord, and the short tours from Flåm are built around getting you up there and back. They take an hour and a half, they are the cheapest thing on this page, and they are what people with a few hours off a ship tend to take.
Those three are what the fares are really measuring. A place on the viewpoint tour starts at $45, the RIB safari most people come here for is $147 for two hours, a full guided day from Bergen with the train and the cruise runs $268 upwards, and a private yacht on the Nærøyfjord goes to $11,690 for the whole boat.
Nine of the fifteen tours here start in Flåm itself, which means the walk from the village to the quay is a few minutes and the fjord begins where the tour does. The other six are full days that pick you up in Bergen, Myrdal or Gudvangen and bring you to Flåm by coach or by rail, with the cruise in the middle of the day.
The month decides what is running rather than which tour is best. From May to September the days are long, the light lasts into the evening and the whole list is on the timetable. April and October are quieter, with changeable weather and fewer people on the quay.
